Postcards from the Gig
Postcards from the Gig

Uncle Music

Hello friends......

My name is   Uncle Music.

I am Vikki Lee's former classmate   (she was a real whiz at trigonometry), her very good friend,  her webmaster, and without a doubt....her NUMBER ONE FAN !!!

Personally... my favorite thing about Vikki... aside from her terrific songwriting prowess,  her great slide guitar playing,  the strong distinctive intonation and quality of her voice,  her always interesting musical production aesthetic,  her effervescent personality,  her refreshing offbeat sense of humor,  and of course, her amazing appetite....(this girl really loves to eat!)...is the fact that she leads a just...

INCREDIBLY   BITCHIN'   BAND   .........the one and only....

Sticky Vikki and the Pinecones

And to all of you out there who have not yet been lucky enough to see them play....make no mistake friends...this band totally   kicks ass "live", whatever, whenever, or wherever they perform!

In fact their gigs are so exciting,  every night they have to take a few customers down off the furniture!

Well...some nights anyway.   After all, a great deal of the furniture at these gigs is not very sturdy...and usually the audience is not that young, dumb, or drunk enough to climb onto anything.....although they certainly always do go wild!

Yes...any performance by   Sticky Vikki and the Pinecones   is an absolutely unforgetable experience!

However....even though watching my dear friend Vikki Lee play "live" is completely outrageous, and one of the most seriously groovy things I can do, I end up missing most of her gigs......and this is very disturbing to me!

As most of you probably know, Sticky Vikki lives in Sacramento, California and she plays the majority of her gigs in the northern area of the state,  whereas Uncle Music resides in the heart of the southland...sunny, smog-filled Los Angeles, the so-called "City of the Angels"...on top of which Uncle Music absolutely hates to travel...(I actually do get intense jet lag simply driving from one end of the San Fernando Valley to the other!)

So...good old Uncle M usually ends up laying around at home, grumpy and moping, while one of the very best live bands in existence is knocking them dead at their shows.

Total     Bummer !!!

But Vikki Lee is such a terrific buddy. She knows how much I would prefer partying with the crowd at gigs...listening to her music with my ear stuck to the front of her amplifier...rather than being parked alone at home....listening to her music with my ear stuck to the front of the stereo speakers....so she started sending me postcards from her gigs. That way I wouldn't feel so left out... and maybe I'd get motivated enough to drag my sorry ass up north to see more of her shows.

Wow....what a sweetheart she is!

So my friends...I thought that I would share with you some of these postcards from the gig. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Maybe I'll be seeing you at one of Vikki Lee's next gigs!

If I'm there, you won't possibly be able to miss me...I'll be the geek with his ear stuck to the front of Sticky Vikki's amplifier!

By the way, we are planning on adding a special new page to Vikki's site. It will be called   Sticky Vikki and the Pinecone's   "Fan E-mails from the Gig" !

So...if any of you fine folks who have been to a recent Sticky Vikki gig and want to tell us how much you enjoyed yourself.... please submit a concise non-vulgar and well-written missive to .

Just remember guys...I will not correct any spelling or grammatical errors.   Also...since our chief executive...Mr. Spud Murphy...will be deciding which of these notes is added to the page...if your note is not included, do me a favor and complain to Spud... and not to me!

OK....here's some of Vikki's post cards....

Dear Uncle M.....
OK.....I'm writing a little in retrospect...........(which font is THAT?).........But I thought we should start out with a card from our favorite Pinecone gig....The Twin Oaks in Penngrove, California. We were lucky enough to have "PineClone" Hank Maninger play with us! He and Jimi James (oops...I mean "Slim Pickins" as he is known up there) switched off on bass and guitar (a Pinecone requirement, of course) and the Pinecones reached new outerstratospheric heights. Hank is definitely worthy of guitar hero status ;o) We also had the great Chris Ivey on pedal steel that night. What a night! What a BAND!!

Dear Uncle Music...
Here is a field report from the road........ yep....THE road! That's the actual one we set-up on for our fun 4th of July picnic party gig. Great people, great FOOD (this is always important), and great fun! I was wearing my flip flops...........you don't DARE call 'em THONGS anymore ;o)...and it was so hot that they kinda melted and the gravel from the road became one with my shoes......I guess it's just a typical aspect of a "road gig"....right? The Pinecones actually created an entirely additional set from one medly! I'm not even sure we ever played any of the songs together before....but HEY....We got a whole bunch of new tunes to add to the song list. Now if I could just remember what they were......

Dear Unk......
Greetings from The Powerhouse Pub in Folsom, California......the absolutely best room to play in the Sacramento area. We rocked the house and came away with much adulation from a GREAT audience.........they were literally screaming at the end of the night! We even got some real "love potion" from Judy's Toy Box which we will probably raffle off at our next gig! A big Pinecone thank you to Chris Ivey on pedal steel who made the night way funner ;o)! Also.."Hi" to our new friends from Colorado......I can't believe it. People are coming up and asking to buy our new CD.....and it's not even pressed yet! How do they know about it?

Hi Uncle M!
We played Friday night at Vaquero in Sonoma, and had 'em cheering and screaming again. What a fun place.....and great food as well!
So...continuing the "bad shoes curse" for the month of July....I wore the worst possible sandles for the gig. Not only were they one size too large....(Why did I buy these things anyway?)........but the soles seemed to be treated with silicone....which proved to be highly precarious on the slick wooden stage floor for Ms. Sticky!
So...what's a girl to do .....but play barefoot?
We had some folks approach the stage and request Pinecone biz cards to book future gigs. Thanks to Chris, we had his Old Mother Hubbard pet food cards which we handed out. One guy asked if the name of the band was "Dog Food!"
Now there's a thought...if we change the name of the band we won't have to spring for more business cards!
Well buddy...a great time was had by all!   ;)

Dear Uncle M....
Greetings from the Hotel Leger in Mokelumne Hill, California! We are having a boo-tiful weekend here amongst the "spirits".....bottled and ghostly. You know this hotel really is haunted! I think some of the non-registered "residents" overheard me yelling to the band, "What key...hey..what key?".....Now we are having lots of "key" issues with our rooms. ;o) Lots of fun here.....can't wait to come back in November!

Dear Onkle Musik,
Here we are back at the Hotel Leger with more ghost stories to report! Once again , the apparitions targeted Alex. He had   "closet issues"   in room #11. His obvious   "possesion"   on the bandstand made itself evident around midnight...at which point he went into a blistering medley in the middle of the dance floor. The audience went crazy! At breakfast the next morning he related his poltergeist experiences....apparently he placed all the shoes in his room neatly along side the beds...the next morning he found all of the right members from each pair lined up in the closet! I guess the ghosts recognized the "sole-fullness" in his guitar solos Saturday night...huh? Our thanks to Allen's Bayou for the fun and great cajun dinners over the weekend too!
C U soon.

Dear Uncle M
Had a great time at the Twin Oaks (our "Pinecone Playground") last night...Our thanks to Stephan Salit, David Jess, and Garland Savoie for making the evening a total blast. Boy, how much funner can anything get then being a girl surrounded by such cool guitar players and all that testosterone? ;o))) Change of plans for the Cones...we will be ushering in 2004 at the Twin Oaks. It will be a "BLOW YOUR DOORS OFF" Legendary New Years Eve...hopefully a harbringer of a great year ahead for Cones and Clones! ! !
Bye for now,
Miss Vikki
